Google will tell you this:

A meta title, also known as a title tag, refers to the text that is displayed on search engine result pages and browser tabs to indicate the topic of a webpage.

If you look at this image here:

1️⃣ is the URL or website address.

2️⃣ is the Meta Title.

3️⃣ is the Meta Description.

The Meta Title is very prominently displayed on a Google Search Engine Results Page (SERP), which shows how significant the Meta Title is.

Well, we think so anyway.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) people debate what’s important and less important to Google as we try to figure out the algorithm … suffice to say that EVERY single SEO professional will agree that the Meta Title is very high up the list of important factors.

“The meta title tells us the main title of the webpage. It’s important to include your keyword as close to the beginning of the title as possible. Then end the title with the website name, for branding purposes.”  

Meta Titles are also called “Title Tags” or “SEO Titles”. 

These all mean the same thing.

Yes, there are rumoured to be over 200 factors that Google looks at when ranking web pages on their search engine, but clearly some are more important than others.

Meta Titles can be as long as 70 characters long, any longer and Google will cut them off on the search results.

When we commence an SEO campaign, we’ll start with keyword research to understand what words and phrases the website we are working on should rank for, and then usually our next step is to check the Meta Titles of the website and all the pages on the website.

It really is an important task!

Summary:  The Meta Title for your website and website pages is the most easily seen part of a search engine result when you look at Google search results for example, and gives a strong hint to Google and people as to the contents of your website page.  

Therefore, it’s important that your Meta Title is aligned with what your website is about, and what your business does.
